Henry : I'm wondering if they'll come at all. When you and Elizabeth quarrelled, she said she'd never set foot in your house again.

Mrs. Slater : She'll come fast enough after her share of what our father's left. You know how hard she can be when she likes. Where she gets it from I can't tell.

Henry :- I suppose it's in the family. (pause) where are my slippers ?

Mrs. Slater: In the kitchen, but you want a new pair, those old ones are nearly worn out. (Nearly breaking down) you don't seem to realize what it's costing me to bear up like I am doing. My heart's fit to break when I see the little trifles that belonged to father lying around, and think he'll never use them again. (Briskly) Here! You'd better wear these slippers of my father's now. It's lucky he'd just got a new pair

Henry :- They'll be very small for me, my dear

Mrs. Slater: Elizabeth's that sharp she'll see I'm after it, and we'll drive a hard bargain over it. Dear Departed - II.

2. Whose things are they going to divide up? Do you think they AN are right in doing so ? Justify.

Answer - Mrs. Slater appears to be selfish and practical. She is focused on claiming her father’s belongings quickly and is prepared to bargain with her sister over them.

4. 'Henry acted under the influence of his wife.' What would you do if you were Henry ?

Answer - If I were Henry, I would try to stop Mrs. Slater from acting selfishly and wait for everyone in the family to discuss the division of belongings respectfully.

Q.No. (5-8) Read the following passage.

All success stories are stories of great failures. The only difference is that every time they failed, they bounced back. This is called failing forward, rather than backward. You learn and move forward. Learn from your failure and keep moving.

In 1914, Thomas Edison at the age of 67, lost his factory, which was worth a few million dollars on fire. It had very little insurance. No longer a young man, Edison watched his lifetime effort go up in smoke and said, "There is great value in disaster. All our mistakes are burnt up. Thank God we can start a new." Inspite of the disaster, three weeks later, he invented the phonograph. What an attitude.

Below are more examples of the failures of successful people;

i) Thomas Edison failed approximately 10,000 times while he was working on the light bulb.

ii) Henry Ford was broke at the age of 40.

iii) Lee Iacocca was fired by Henry Ford - II at the age of 54.

iv) Young Beethoven was told that he had no talent for music,

but he gave some of the best music to the world.

(Every success story is also a story of Great Failures)

Answer each of the following questions in three to four sentences. 4x3=12

5. How did Thomas Edison react when he lost everything to fire ?

Answer - Edison remained calm and positive. He saw the disaster as a chance to learn from his mistakes and start over.

Answer - Edison’s attitude was optimistic and resilient. Instead of giving up, he found hope in the disaster and focused on moving forward.

7. "All success stories are stories of great failures." Explain the statement by drawing references from the passage.

Answer - Success often follows failure, as shown by Edison, who failed many times before inventing the light bulb. Similarly, Henry Ford was broke at 40, and Beethoven was initially told he had no talent but still created great music. These examples show that failure is part of the journey to success.

8. Pick three True statements according to the passage.

A) Despite failures successful people bounce back.

B) When you fail you should take back step rather than moving forward.

C) Edison believed that disasters give an opportunity for people to start over a new.

D) Henry Ford had become bankrupt at the age of 40.

* Problems faced by the old age people

* Role & Responsibility of younger generation in taking care of old age people.

Answer - The Editor

The Hindustan Times

New Delhi

Subject: Addressing Neglect of Senior Citizens

Sir/Madam,

I am writing to highlight the growing negligence towards senior citizens in our society. Many younger people are moving abroad or focusing entirely on their careers, leaving the elderly without proper care.

This neglect leads to loneliness, depression, and physical health issues among seniors. It is our responsibility to care for them, ensuring they live with dignity.

The younger generation must realize that respecting the elderly is crucial. Simple acts like spending time with them or providing assistance can make a huge difference.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
